The subtitle of The Little Red Sports Car is "A Modern Fable About Diabetes." The story is about a car with an automatic transmission (e.g., the pancreas) that breaks. The car has to be changed to a manual transmission and needed a special additive to run again (e.g., insulin injections).

C.D.E. (Certified Diabetes Educator)
A health professional who is certified by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators to teach people with diabetes how to manage their condition. The criteria to obtain this certification include:
- a degree in the health professions such as R.N. (nursing), M.D. or D.O. (physicians), R.D. (dietitians), R.Ph. or Pharm.D. (pharmacists), M.S.W. (social workers), and others.
- at least two years' experience in diabetes education.
- successful completion of a comprehensive examination covering the field.
Certified Diabetes Educators must be recredentialed every 5 years. Visit the American Association of Diabetes Educators website to learn more about diabetes education. You may also visit the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators website to learn more about the Certification process.

Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet is a group of studies looking at the prevention and early treatment of type 1 diabetes.
Families are Needed Who Have an Infant Under age 5 Months or a Mother in the Last Trimester of Pregnancy and a Family Member with Type 1 Diabetes are highly encouraged to participate in the TrialNet NIP study.
NYU researchers are looking for teens with type 2 diabetes or teens with a BMI over 30, aged 14-19, for a study at the NYU Medical Center. The study involves two visits to the medical center, and includes cognitive testing (memory, etc.), a blood sample, and an MRI scan of the brain. Parental consent is necessary for those under 18. All volunteers will be financially compensated $100 for their time.
Behavioral specialists at the Joslin Diabetes Center and the University of Virginia seek help from parents who have children with diabetes from ages 6 to 11.
The University of California at Irvine has a new Exercise in Teens with Type 1 study.
Clinical Trials for Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes is seeking people ages 8-30 who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes within the past six weeks for the AbATE Trial.
The Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium is seeking families with at least 2 siblings diagnosed with type 1 diabetes prior to age 35. They are also interested in having the parents participate, as well as other siblings without diabetes. In this study, researchers will be trying to identify genes influencing an individuals risk for developing type 1 diabetes. By furthering the knowledge of these genes, the researchers hope to prevent type 1 diabetes in the future.

The University of Florida is running a study about Cord Blood and Diabetes.
A study on Autoantigen Vaccination In Human Type 1 Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus is seeking adults 18-35 who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus less than three months.

I have 8 month old non-diabetic granddaughter who's sister has type 1 diabetes. The baby was transitioning from Stage 1 babyfood to starting on table food. At dinner the other day, my daughter opened a container of baby food and looked concerned as she stirred it. She asked me if I thought it looked bad because it was lumpy. I bent over the container and asked my daughter, "Is it Type 1?" What I meant to say was Stage 1.

Hello! My name is Cecy, I am 13 years old and live in Xalapa, Mexico.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in August of 2004 before entering 6th grade. At first I lost a lot of weight, drank a lot of water and slept all day. The doctors thought I had hepatitis but later, when I returned to the hospital, my blood sugar level was very high and that was when they diagnosed me with diabetes.
Nobody in my family is diabetic but all they support me a lot and when there are parties and they buy food and special candies for me!
