Question: From East Grinstead, West Sussex, UK:
Our friend's daughter has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She copes well with the insulin injections but suffers from a painful gout-like condition in her feet. An MRI scan showed no abnormalities and blood tests gave no indication of the cause of the pain. Recently, a friend of hers (a girl of similar age) also complained of a similar pain. Is this a common complication of type 1 diabetes?
Answer:
That is not a typical complication of diabetes. Talking with your pediatrician and perhaps consultation with a pediatric orthopedic doctor would be my recommendation.
