Question: From Athens, Greece: Is it possible that another child (by keeping blasto cells from the placenta) can help my oldest son (six and a half-years-old), diagnosed two months ago with type 1 diabetes? I am 43 years old and I have two other boys. Answer: Theoretically, it is possible, but it is very expensive and still experimental/theoretical research, at best. The same can be said for stem cell research of any kind. It is all very promising, but still too early to use except in animal research and early human experimental trials.
